Here comes the flood.
Supernatural, 'Abandon All Hope...':
--The very first shot of the episode was of convoluted highway architecture! HEEEEEE. <-- Good Omens nerd
--Mark! A.! Sheppard! I was spoiled for his casting, but when his credit appeared onscreen, I was surprised by the surprise I felt in realising he hadn't showed up before now. The character he always plays when he guest stars anywhere just seems like such a natural fit with SPN. *g*
--Aaaaaaaaand slash fandom gets its monkey's-paw wish-fulfillment of an all-male crossroad-deal-kiss starring some old, portly dude who refuses to buy what Mark Sheppard's selling, physicality-wise. *gol-darnit fingersnap* ;)
--"I think I'm starting to feel something." *SNERK*
--I missed who directed this episode, but whoever it was did a really freaking excellent job with the incredibly simple yet incredibly effective sleight-of-hand involved in the appearances/disappearances/reveals of Crowley, Castiel, and the reapers. I think my favourite was Castiel taking himself from the backseat of the truck to the sidewalk beside Jo (close runner-up: Cas taking himself from the street to the window where the reaper had been standing), but all of them were really nicely done. (Ah, the wonders one can achieve with a teeny-tiny budget and a knowledgeable Canadian film crew. *g* [OH AND. I was half-watching an old episode of DaVinci's Inquest earlier that featured a prominent establishing shot of a billboard welcoming travellers to "Super Natural Vancouver". I assume such signs were part of some Vancouver Tourism initiative that no longer exists, and the signs have since been taken down, because otherwise, I would've thought such a sign would've showed up in a SPN gag reel by now. *g*])
--I have always thought Dean and Jo had a way better exasperated-older-brother/pesky-little-s
--Okay, CALL ME CRAZY, but I thought the very fact of Jo and Ellen's inclusion in the Apocalypse Season foreshadowed their inevitable doom. (I was shocked when they survived 'Good God, Y'All', quite frankly. SHOCKED!) Does it suck that they're dead? Heck yeah, mostly because the show had them on the canvas since s2 and never bothered to use them to anything even approximating their full potential. But this is SPN, and come on: for non-evil female characters, it's amazing they lived as long as they did, and we all knew it was coming, so...I shake my head and am very sad we won't see them again, but I'm not getting up in arms.
Also? As
apocalypsos said, they went out the way more of SPN's female characters should've: with guts, with glory, and with an impact on the unfolding of events. I could ask for more than that, but a) I know what show I'm watching, and b) it's too late, anyway, so. Yes.
All of that said, though: the part that Got Me was when Ellen realised Jo was gone, had died before the hell hounds were even where they needed to be for the bomb to have any effect. In that moment, Samantha Ferris gave us Ellen's pain at losing her daughter, her relief that Jo's suffering had ended, her satisfaction in knowing she'd been right to stay, and her peaceful resolution to carry out the plan as Jo'd laid it out, and all of that was hardcore crystal awesome. *salutes the Harvelles*
--Lucifer blah blah Dean unconscious Sam indignant final scene silent emo manpain etc blah. Detroit rock city!
