Coming soon to a very liberal (probably arts) university near you: THE FANFIC COURSE

(Disclaimer: this is entirely an exercise in my freaky-ass brain. Think of it as recs with homework. And pretension.)

Professor: Jayne Leitch
TAs (because they told me I should post this): Celli, MaryKate
Tutorial: Tuesdays, 1:30-2:30 Lecture: Tuesdays, 3:30-5:30
The tutorial (seminar, for you Americans) happens before the lecture every week due to fanfic's great dependence on the reader's knowledge of the source show, and occasionally specific episodes, in order to make any sense at all. It would be highly counterproductive to send students into discussions without first acquainting them with a) the episodes that inspired the fic and b) the fic that relates back to the episodes. The week's structure needs to provide for both. Think of it this way:
--lecture, in which episodes are screened
--one week, in which students read the assigned stories and/or essays
--tutorial, in which the episodes and the fic are discussed together
--next lecture, in which new episodes are screened...etc, etc
Therefore, the readings listed each week refer back to the lecture of the previous week, be it screened material or lectured material.

<lj user="akamarykate">: Assignment #3--start a fandom war!!
megsjayne: *snerk* Oh, *man*...but fanDOM is a different thing than fanFIC...
megsjayne: I'd need to come up with a whole other course for fanDOM, and I don't have
the necessary background in cultural anthropology for that one. :)
megsjayne: Or sociology.
megsjayne: Or psychology. *g*
megsjayne: Abnormal psychology!
akamarykate: You'd need all those things to deal with fandom.
akamarykate: Criminology, too

We didn't have none of this fancy schmancy too-tory-al stuff when I done gone to get my degree in the fine art of English. (Which might explain why none of what I done learnt seems to have been retained!) This course looks difficult, yet interesting. I do think I could excel at Assignment #3, though. Heh.

Wait, wait, wait. Your spelling betrays you! Grammer aside, you're *edumacated*!!!

Assignment 3 is the gimme, I think. *Anybody* can start a fandom war, as long as they've got an internet connection and know where the right boards are. :).

Yes! You're homework! You've written stuff that students will loathe simply for existing, then grudgingly admit they liked after they actually get around to reading it!

...Or, so I assume from watching my friends. Because Lord knows I *never* decide books suck just 'cause they're on a scholastic reading list. Ahaha. ;).

Oh, you could take the course! I'd just have to make sure you got into one of the TA's tutorial groups, so there wouldn't be grading bias.

Oh, I like the assignments you worked in! I love your brain, even when it's not the one we share. Damn, this should be a required course, you know? Or at least, read the syllabus, and if you don't get at least *some* of it...well, there are archives for people like that, too, I suppose. Hee.

Well, there needed to be some writing assignments--if *I* have to write at least one long-ass thingie per class per term, so does *everybody else*--and I liked your idea for the exam but I couldn't make it work unless there were pre-existing fics, so...

I kinda think it was an elegant solution. *g*
