I'll Follow You Tonight by cherryice, Shelter, film overview. A gorgeous vid full of subtle musicality, use of light and scenery and above all the delicate sense of wistfulness and beauty that permeates the film itself. I posted when I saw the film a while ago and really enjoyed it, and Cherry just does a phenomenal job of bringing out all the key elements of how and why it works. |

| (audio)books on tap |
[Jan. 8th, 2010|01:17 am] |
I had some minor issues with Audible for a while and so I accumulated a bunch of credits, so I got to have a little audiobook buying binge. I have boughten:
Inside of a Dog: What A Dog Sees, Smells and Knows by Alexandra Horowitz (excellent so far!) The Incredible Journey by Shiela Burnford <-- (it will be interesting to revisit this book so many years after I first read it. I wonder if I'll be assaulted by casual racism and sexism as is so often my experience rereading older children's books.) What the Dog Saw by Malcolm Gladwell -- (I don't know if this is actually about dogs, but I saw Malcom Gladwell interviewed and was impressed *g*.) Precious by Sapphire -- (I was escited to hear that this was a book first.) The City and The City by China Meiville -- (okay, okay I will try this China Mieville book!) Songs of the Dying Earth -- a tribute to Jack Vance by lots of sf authors -- I am a huge Jack Vance fan and Neil Gaiman has a story in here along with a whole bunch of other sf writers, many of whom I like.) |

Well, the truck is mostly packed. shinetheway and I have a few things left to put in there in the morning (like, you know, the bed that our laptops and us are curled up on), but I'd say that we have less than an hour's worth of things left to do. We're aiming to leave around 7am CST, which means we'll probably make it on the road around 8am or so.
We've pretty much spent the entire day packing. That, and cleaning out my supply of alcohol so that we wouldn't have quite as much to pack. Shine's helped quite a bit in that regard. ;-)
But, yes. T minus six hours, more or less. |

| Saving Sarah... on TV |

After a bit of a hiatus, we're kicking back into action at savethescc. The Terminator rights get auctioned off in February and once there's a new owner, we've got a shot at TSCC again. In the meantime, we need to rally the fans — energize the resistance. So we're making a TV commercial to raise awareness of the fight. It'll be done through Google TV ads, which means we'll be bidding for the air time. This isn't something you'll see on prime time network TV, but we will have the ability to target our audience. It'll be cool. And fun. And maybe you'll be in it... Step one is for all of you to make a video. |

| New Years Resolutions |
[Jan. 7th, 2010|09:57 pm] |
"I've never read... a book." - Dave Lister, Red Dwarf
I have read a book. In fact, I have read multiple books. Er, I don't remember when that was exactly, but I can say with complete certainty that it did happen. Sometime.
In acknowledgment of the fact that I really ought to read more, I am embarking on a project. Over the next year, I am going to read my books. That's right, the bookshelves of non-fiction I bought for "reference" (i.e., because they sounded awesome) are actually going to be read. By me. This year. Maybe not all of them because, well, I am human and do need to sleep occasionally, but goddamn it I'm going to try.
And yes, I do own fiction, so that's on the list as well. Though, it's worth pointing out that about 84% of that is written by Terry Pratchett and should probably be devoured as one gluttonous whole.
First up, Unseen Academicals (Terry Pratchett; though, really, see above) because it was a Christmas present and there's a reasonable chance Lord Vetinari is in it. And then, uh...
Having assigned my shelves numbers and asked crimsonquills, she has selected "8" as my starting point. Coincidentally, Shelf 8 is home to my trades which I'm behind on and so, um, totally count. As books. Comic books. Yes.
Wish me luck.
Oh yeah, and I want to finally shift the weight and exercise more and get a boyfriend and expand my social circle and go back to school and find a new job and develop a fashion sense and have adventures and finish my Castiel plushie goddamn it and brush my teeth more frequently. It's going to be a busy year. |

| good vs. bad |
[Jan. 7th, 2010|09:50 pm] |
The good: I will be going to visit scarletts_awry five weeks from today! This isn't a moving-related trip, but a short vacation that I'm taking over Presidents' Day weekend. We will go out for sushi and listen to music and go to the place where I can have grits for breakfast and go shopping, and it will be awesome.
The bad: I have Captain Trips beriberi the Martian Death Flu a respiratory ailment of undetermined origin. I have had this for a good ten days now, since I got back from New York, and even while I was still back East over the holidays, I was beginning to feel rundown and like something was coming on. At which point I began obsessing over not wanting to get sick and taking large doses of Vitamin C and various cold medicines, none of which did me a damn bit of good.
It's not even the kind of full-blown cold in which one goes through a box of tissues in a day or is constantly coughing. I do have an occasional cough, but mostly I'm just constantly congested and my throat hurts and I'm feeling generally Not Well. Which, from talking to other people who I know are sick right now, seems to be how this year's post-holiday bout of ick is manifesting itself. And I am done with it.
The good: My manager recommended yesterday that I take Tylenol PM before I go to bed, and he is a freaking genius. Not only did it let me sleep for more than a few hours at a stretch, but I felt better today than I have since I got back to L.A. Still congested -- the ick isn't gone -- but better.
When I woke up this morning, I did feel, a little bit, like tweety birds were circling my head, but it's totally worth it.
The further good: the library sent me a notice that they got in my hold copy of Stephen King's Under the Dome, which I will pick up on Saturday. I've been disappointed by his work more often than not in the latter half of his career, but I loved the short story collection Just After Sunset, so I remain hopeful. |

Fandom THE SENTINEL Pairing: none, gen Length:58K Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: Johanna's Page at Cascade Library Why this must be read: Two of the tropes of Sentinel fic are that Jim is somehow hostage to his senses, and Blair gets kidnapped...a lot. Here, both are played out in a way that defines both tropes for me. I first read this back when I was hovering on the edge of the fandom in 2000 (when it was new), and I've loved it ever since. You don't have to know much about the show to love Jim in it, though having watched the show, I love it even more, as I can totally see a sick Jim trying desperately to rescue Blair and using a checklist to help him do it. Great lines, great cameo by Simon, and a kidnapper who...well, go read it already! :-)

I've decided that what annoys me about LJ is not the element of performativity itself, but that most people are so bad at it. |

1. Snow day! We only got a dusting of snow, sleet, and rain, but most of it fell while the temps were slightly above 32. Tomorrow morning's temp is supposed to be 15, and that combined with the slush on hilly roads will cause some treacherous school bus routes. I'm certainly not complaining! Yes, we're overreacting compared to other places that are used to ice and snow, but we're simply not equipped for it. We don't have a fleet of sand trucks and de-icers throughout the city, and why would we if we get ice storms perhaps once a year? (If we did have all those trucks, Fox News would just call it "wasteful government spending". ;) I was already planning to rant about people doing the whole "You people are ridiculous about a tiny bit of snow" that I hear each time this happens, then Jezebel called it winter oneupsmanship. Great way to put it, though the advice about boiling water to de-ice a windshield is a very, very bad idea.
2. I've been watching the Alabama-Texas game tonight, even though I know nothing about college football. Despite my conflicted issues with the state of Texas itself, I usually root for the Longhorns in these matchups because UT (hook 'em!) was my safety if I didn't get into Trinity. But tonight I've kinda found myself going for 'Bama. Hmm. Guess ten years of living in the South has rubbed off on me. ;) And on a Roll Tide note, check out workerbee73's post about the similarities between fandom and college football.
3. Apropos of nothing: I really hate those new man-on-the-street commercials for T-Mobile in which the "funky artist" holds up mannequin body parts and says that she doesn't want to pay an arm and a leg. Look, I have a huge weakness for really bad puns, but that one always makes me push the mute button.
4. When winter storms meet fandom: I got a kick out of this story about Jamie Bamber and his kids playing in the snow. Aww.
5. The good thing about having the day off is that it gives me some time to play with the latest BSG porn battle. Not sure my writing mojo will hold up, but some of the prompts are giving me fun ideas. :) |

| Hysterical Blindness |
[Jan. 7th, 2010|07:05 pm] |
|
http://serialdrama.typepad.com/serial_drama/2010/01/hysterical-blindness.html I watched All My Children today (in about eight minutes, total, since my thumb has a tendency to get a bit liberal with the fast-forward button, but that's neither here nor there) and I can honestly say that I (not to mention people within earshot) will never be the same again (due to clawing my own eyes out and going deaf from hearing my anguished screams, respectively). My evening has thus been spent going through the stages of grief, mourning the way that I used to be. DENIAL "That didn't just happen! I must have...eaten a scone laced with an especially dangerous strain of a hallucinogenic that made me imagine that." ANGER "How could you do that to me, eyes? Why did you let me see that?" BARGAINING "I will kill a hobo if it would let me un-see that." DEPRESSION "Sorry, I couldn't hear what you were saying over the sound of my huge, wrenching sobs. Come again?" There is no way to write about what happened with The Thing, both because I've run out of clever ways to say "Why, for the love of God, why?" and because in order to write about it, I'd have to remember... |

Seen on Freecycle today: stuffed prating dog. Turns out it was a typo for “praying,” but I’d be into a prating dog, at least as long as I could turn it off. ( Ilona Andrews, Daniel Abraham, musical history, cars, lawyer-novelists )

| REC: Ouroboros by valderys (PG13) |
[Jan. 7th, 2010|09:44 pm] |
Title: Ouroboros Fandom: Torchwood Pairing: Jack/Ianto, Lisa/Ianto Author on LJ: valderys Author Website: valderys Why this must be read:
The author says: Ianto never gives up, and he never surrenders. Not even when he’s forgotten what he’s meant to be fighting for…
I think this is a fantastic look at who Ianto really is and what he is capable of. He's not the innocent people often make him out to be and sometimes, it's good to be reminded of that fact.
Excerpt: The sound of gunfire was dreadful in that small space, and Ianto stared into… Lisa’s unfamiliar eyes and smiled his love in those last few seconds. But then the noise stopped and he was still alive. He thought he was alive. The smell of cordite almost overwhelmed the smell of blood, but he could move, he could breathe, the air still stung his throat. It seemed good enough. He didn’t move though. He curled his fingers into the girl’s shirt, and hung on. She stared at him, but didn’t try to talk, and Ianto was grateful for that.
He’d done everything he could. He’d lied for her, he’d whored for her. He’d cheated, and stole, and been responsible for murders. The only way he could give her up now was if they pried her from his cold dead fingers.
Ianto realised he still had the gun Jack had given back to him. It was on the floor by his shoulder where he’d dropped it as he’d moved. He took it up again, in the ringing silence after the gunfire, he took it up again and then he turned once more, making sure his body was still a shield. But he had to see them, he had to know what they were going to do. He couldn’t afford to turn his back, or to let them sedate him – Owen could be sneaking up behind him with a needle, even as he cowered.
Things were far from over, and he had to be strong – he had to remain strong – for Lisa’s sake. Nothing had really changed. Lisa still needed his help. It was still the two of them against the rest of the world.
He looked up into four sets of appalled eyes, and slowly raised the gun.
